US President Trump has long made it clear that he wants to restrict the rights of the LGBTIQ+ community. Now he is following his words with actions: In a Tiktok video, trans actress Hunter Schafer shows her new US passport, which identifies her as male.
US trans actress Hunter Schafer has expressed her dismay in a Tiktok video that her passport identifies her as "male". This is a direct result of a decree by President Donald Trump's administration that requires official documents to indicate the gender assigned at birth. The "Euphoria" actress, who has been registered as female since she was a teenager, appears "shocked" in the clip: "I didn't think it would actually happen," said the 26-year-old.
This event highlights the real impact of the Trump administration's policies on the rights of transgender people. Trump has made it clear since the beginning of his term that he plans to restrict the rights of minorities, especially the LGBTIQ+ community. Shortly after taking office, the Republican signed a decree ending the recognition of gender reassignment for minors, calling it "mutilation."
"It's not just talk, it's real"Despite repeated announcements and measures already implemented by the new government, Schafer is surprised that Trump is now actually implementing his political decisions. At first she didn't believe that he would follow his words with actions, Hunter Schafer admits in her Tiktok video. "I won't believe it until I see it," she thought. "Today I saw it," she continues, holding her new passport up to the camera.
The speed at which the decisions are being implemented scares her, Schafer reveals. "Because things just start happening, like historic rises of fascism and everything that this new government represents. There is a lot of talk and then things start happening and we start to normalize the circumstances in which we live." Now she knows: "It's not just talk, it's real and it's happening. No one - no matter what the circumstances, no matter how wealthy or white or pretty or whatever - is excluded."
Schafer stresses that the change in her passport does not affect her identity as a trans woman, but does present her with practical challenges, especially when traveling internationally. She fears that she will now have to come out to border officials more often. "Trans people are beautiful. We will never stop existing. I will never stop being trans. A letter and a passport cannot change that," the actress concluded. "And screw this government!"
