At a street festival in Vancouver on Saturday evening (local time), a man drove his car into a crowd, killing several people. Vancouver police reported this on Platform X. Several other people were injured. The driver is in custody. No further information about the incident or possible causes was immediately available.

According to media reports, the festival is the so-called Lapu Lapu Festival, which is considered a major Filipino festival and takes place annually. Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim reportedly said he was shocked and saddened by the horrific incident. "Our thoughts are with all those affected and with the Filipino community in Vancouver during this incredibly difficult time."

A radio station, citing an eyewitness, reported that screams were suddenly heard as an SUV drove through the crowd, hitting more than a dozen people. The driver reportedly attempted to flee on foot, but was detained at the scene by several people. Canada's parliamentary elections will take place on Monday.
