Official reports indicate more deaths have occurred in the protests that have been ongoing in Indonesia for days. Three people were killed after demonstrators set fire to the parliament building in South Sulawesi province, the Indonesian Disaster Management Agency announced on Saturday. Five other people were injured. The incident occurred on Friday in Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi.
The Antara news agency reported that the victims were presumably trapped in the burning building. The nationwide protests represent the first major test for the government of President Prabowo Subianto, who took office in October.
The demonstrations began on Monday in the capital, Jakarta, and were primarily directed against the high salaries of members of parliament. On Friday, the protests escalated after an armored police vehicle struck the driver of a motorcycle taxi. The man, who was reportedly not involved in the demonstrations, died.
On Friday, local media reported sporadic looting in Jakarta. New demonstrations were reported in the major cities of Bandung and Yogyakarta. On Saturday, there were initially no signs of new protests in the Southeast Asian country.
