Friedrichshain gift fence to be cleared – SPD faction wants to prevent this

The SPD faction in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district council has submitted an urgent motion against the removal of a gift fence. According to the SPD faction's motion, it became known last week that the district office had already agreed to the removal of the gift fence at Forckenbeckplatz - "Forcki". The SPD is demanding that this be reversed and that the fence be tolerated. "For many people inside and outside the neighborhood, the gift fence has become a meeting point where books, clothing and household items are exchanged - this is both social and sustainable," says the motion, which was initiated by Peggy Hochstädter.
Several volunteers take care of keeping the fence clean and tidy every day, "so that the sweeper can easily drive through the area," the SPD faction writes. "Clothes are usually hung on hangers, but they change hands very quickly anyway." The faction describes the donation fence as a good way to get hold of well-preserved items that would otherwise end up in the trash or on the streets - "especially for people with no or low income." The application is to be discussed at the upcoming meeting of the district council on February 26.
