Meeting between Rubio and Kallas in Washington canceled – after fuss about Ukraine negotiations

A meeting between EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, which was scheduled for Wednesday, has apparently been cancelled. As the news portal Euronews reports, the meeting will not take place at a later date during Kallas' official visit to Washington. Kallas, who had already arrived in Washington, will not meet Rubio "due to scheduling reasons. They last met during the Munich Security Conference," her spokesman told the portal.
Kallas flew to the American capital in the expectation of meeting her counterpart and discussing Donald Trump's push to start peace negotiations with Russia and Ukraine . The talks, which have so far taken place with Ukraine and the EU excluded, have led to criticism and uncertainty in the EU. Kallas now traveled to the American capital to explore possibilities for the Europeans to participate in the Ukraine talks between the USA and Russia.
Ukraine talks: Kallas called for involvement in diplomatic processThe EU's chief diplomat had also previously criticized the White House's actions, describing the concessions offered to the Kremlin as a form of appeasement and demanding that both Ukraine and Europe be closely involved in the diplomatic process that is beginning. "I have made it very clear that no agreement without us, without Ukraine or without Europe will work in practice - and that also applies to the United States , which must work with us," Kallas said on Monday when announcing the meeting with Secretary of State Rubio. "A bad agreement for Ukraine is a bad agreement for Europe, but it is also a bad agreement for America."
On Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron met with Trump in the White House and spoke of progress afterwards. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected in Washington on Thursday. According to diplomats, the EU institutions have so far found it difficult to establish contact with the new US government. (with AFP)
