Tradition in motion: Alpabtrieb in Schwarzenberg delights young and old

This year's Alpabtrieb (cattle drive) in Schwarzenberg in the Bregenzerwald region was once again a celebration of living traditions. On Saturday, September 6, 2025, numerous Alpine farmers returned from the high alpine pastures to the valley with their decorated herds. Preparations had already been in full swing in the days leading up to it. Visitors from all over Vorarlberg experienced the traditional Alpabtrieb (cattle drive) in late summer weather.
The morning was bustling around the church square. Visitors from the region and beyond lined the streets to witness the traditional cattle drive. Cows with ornate headdresses and bells were led into the village by their owners. For many children, it was a special experience to see and pet the animals up close.
According to participants, the first herds started as early as 4:00 a.m. At the site, the dairymen and dairywomen handed over the herds to the respective farmers. The animals then spent about three weeks on the so-called "Vorsäß" alp before finally returning to their home farm.
The cattle drive from the Alps takes place every year at the beginning of September. Previously, it often took place in the middle of the month. However, due to changing vegetation and the sometimes earlier onset of weather, the date has been brought forward.
This year, too, it became clear that Albtag is not just an agricultural event, but a social celebration that strengthens community and cultural identity. "I'm an Alpine farmer myself and I'm proud to be a part of it every year," one participant told LÄNDLE TV.
