Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen begins an official visit to Mongolia on Monday. He will be received by President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh in the capital, Ulaanbaatar. "The visit is intended to expand bilateral relations and open doors for Austria's economy to the Asian market, creating jobs for the future," the Presidential Chancellery said in advance. This is the first time a Federal President has visited Mongolia.
The Federal President will be accompanied by a business, scientific, and cultural delegation. Several agreements and letters of intent are to be signed during the visit. Van der Bellen also plans to visit the Genghis Khan Museum in Ulaanbaatar, which houses one of the world's largest collections on the legendary Mongol ruler. The empire founded by Genghis Khan was twice the size of China in the 13th century and extended into present-day Romania.
On Tuesday, Van der Bellen will open a business roundtable meeting in Ulaanbaatar together with business delegates. Mongolia is the most sparsely populated country in the world. It is 19 times larger than Austria, but has a population of just over three million, almost half of whom live in the capital, Ulaanbaatar. Van der Bellen is traveling from Japan, where he met with Emperor Naruhito this week and visited the World Expo (EXPO) in Osaka.
