  • Title: Il Canto degli Italiani (The Song of the Italians), also Fratelli d'Italia ( Brothers of Italy)
  • Text: Goffredo Mameli
  • Music: Michele Novaro
  • Year: 2017

The national anthem of Italy, also known as "Il Canto degli Italiani" or "Fratelli d'Italia," was written and composed in the autumn of 1847. The lyrics were written by Goffredo Mameli, a young poet and patriot who was only 20 years old when he composed the anthem. The music was composed by Michele Novaro, a composer from Genoa. "Il Canto degli Italiani" was written in the context of the Italian unification movement, the Risorgimento. This movement aimed to unite the many small states and kingdoms on the Italian peninsula into a united Italy. The anthem was first sung publicly in Genoa on December 10, 1847, and quickly spread as a patriotic song among Italian freedom fighters.

Although the anthem has long played an important role in Italian history, it was not officially recognized as Italy's provisional national anthem until October 12, 1946. Only on December 4, 2017, after many decades, was "Il Canto degli Italiani" finally declared the official national anthem by law.

What's special about the Italian national anthem is its close connection to the history of the Risorgimento. It was a symbol of the struggle for freedom and unity and was sung by many Italian freedom fighters during the revolutions of the 19th century.

Despite not being officially recognized until the 20th century, the anthem was sung at many revolutionary and patriotic events during the 19th and early 20th centuries, reinforcing its role as a symbol of resistance and unity.
