Coyotl, hero and beast… against injustice

From the largest cities to the smallest towns, every day in Mexico we hear news about how organized crime harms Mexican society in different ways.

And in that feeling, everyone , at some point, has imagined a vigilante who comes and puts order to injustices and abuses. One of them is the actor Alejandro Spietzer , who, by playing Lupe in the new Max series , Cóyotl, hero and beast , had a catharsis as a citizen.

There are different types of characters and themes that hurt society and that also hurt me as an interpreter and that is the responsibility that exists, to face it with total seriousness. There is something that I was very clear about and that is that in no way would I have made a story in which, as we have often seen, these groups are exalted, here it is the opposite and that really seems to me to be a catharsis for us as Mexicans.

I'm sure we've all dreamed at some point that something or someone would stop this, that whether it's right or not to take justice into our own hands is up for debate and it's a question that we left there on the table, especially in a place like La Moneda in this fiction where there is no law to begin with, so I do believe that it was the way to address all of this," Alejandro shared in an interview with Excélsior .

As part of the Mucho Más Mexa label , four years ago Max ventured to film —in the middle of the pandemic— Cóyotl, héroe y bestia , on location in Pachuca and Durango . The story that Genaro Quiroga thought of takes place in a corrupt north disputed by two rival gangs of organized crime , where violence paralyzes; a young man named Lupe will accept the destiny that his origins have in store for him and will become a beast-man.

THE STORY OF A MEXICAN HERO

This series tells the story of a Mexican hero who will fight to defend his people and become the guardian that his people need, starting an epic struggle between good and evil . A different proposal within the genre in which, for the first time, the villain will be the one who experiences true fear.

When they offered me this project, I read it and it seemed very risky. The first thing I asked myself was 'how are we going to do this?' I didn't realize that when they introduced me to the whole team, we were surrounded by a wonderful, top-notch team, from the entire cast of actors such as Pau Gaitán, José Meléndez, Lucía Uribe, Mauricio Isaac and Horacio García Rojas.

And on the other hand we have Spectral Motion, who were the ones who made Hellboy, Stranger Things ... I mean, we were very well protected, so I felt strong enough to start this battle and I didn't hesitate. It was something that happened quickly," added the actor.

Speitzer, as well as Paulina Gaytán , with whom she shared the interview set, agree that not only the experience of filming during the pandemic brought them together not only as a work team , but also as friends and left them with a clear lesson that unity is always strength in any situation.

"I feel like it made us stay together all the time and be the friends we are now. The truth is that I had an incredible time, we made a wonderful team. Making a series or a movie is always difficult, but having done it during the pandemic was like an anomaly in the industry that, in some way, was a gift," said Gaytán.

"I think there are many lessons to be learned from this story. It leaves us with many, many things to think about. One of the things that I appreciate and that I find very powerful is that, as in this fiction, I realize that united Mexicans are much stronger and that is what this people do, unite against injustice and against all the horror that they want to sow," said Speitzer.
