Today, Monday, February 24, is Flag Day, a significant date in the history of Mexico . The emblem symbolizes the unity, freedom and independence of the nation; and it is recognized by its three main colors: green, white and red, but they are not the only ones it has, because those of the national shield also count. For more than 40 years, the National Flag has come to life in the Clothing and Equipment Factory (Fave) of the Secretariat of National Defense , where more than a thousand flags of various sizes are produced during the year .

The Fave is the place where all the flags that adorn government buildings and fly in public squares across the country are made . The national flags are machine-made and hand-painted by members of the Army , who learn these skills in practice.

Sergeant Carina García, from the painting area, comments that despite the existence of more modern industrial processes, the handmade shield is more durable and has better detail : "It is for the nation, you have to put care into it. It is not just anything," she says.

A 120-meter flag can take up to two days of painting and five days of making .

There are 11 colors used for the shield and five for the shades , and four elements working together are needed to make it. That is, 16 colors plus the three that make up the stripes: green, white and red. In total, 19 colors are used to form a Mexican flag .
