'Where are the thieves?', Shakira's hit that has a true story in Bogotá

Shakira has a distinguished musical career, full of well-deserved awards, recognition, hits and 12 studio albums. The Barranquilla native has immortalized the story of her life in her lyrics, as many of her songs are based on her own experiences.
One of these songs is 'Where are the thieves?' , the eponymous title of her fourth album. It was released in 1998, broke several records and received nominations for important awards, such as the Grammys.
This rock, Latin pop and dance-rock album is one of the most remembered and loved by Shakira fans. 'Ciega, sordomuda', 'Si te vas' and 'Inevitable' are some of the popular songs that are part of it.
Another notable song has the same title as the album, 'Where are the thieves?', and was created after a robbery that the artist experienced in the city of Bogotá.

Shakira has repeatedly spoken about the story behind 'Where Are the Thieves?'. In an interview for 'MTV' she recounted the robbery she suffered while she was in Bogotá.
"When I was at an airport, my suitcase was stolen. One of those suitcases had my songs in it. I didn't have a copy, I didn't remember anything. It was traumatic, I was about to start this new album," said the Barranquilla native.
The singer of 'Día de enero' had just returned from her tour when her luggage was stolen. She spoke about the frustration that the events caused her, since she had the musical themes ready, but without correcting them.

"The songs, the days and the nights that accompanied those feelings, I was completely traumatized. The 'robbery syndrome', depression, sadness, blocked," she added.
In the interview, Shakira revealed that the thieves never showed up , despite all the Colombian news outlets asking for the singer's documents to be returned.
"No one ever reported it, I offered a reward, everything. I was willing to sell my car," he said.
Similarly, Norberto Jiménez, former promoter of Sony Music, also recalled the events and said: "It is a song that she made because at some point when she came to Bogotá to do promotion, I don't know why her purse was lost or stolen. And in the purse she had some lyrics, some lyrics from the music of the album that she wanted to start recording."
