Rihanna and A$AP Rocky: Fashion, Pregnancy, and Aesthetic Power

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky: Fashion, Pregnancy, and Aesthetic Power
Not only do they dominate the music charts and red carpets, Rihanna and A$AP Rocky have become one of the most influential duos on the contemporary style scene, with their own unique, trend-setting aesthetic language. As a political, cultural, and emotional statement, the artist duo has elevated fashion to a highly distinctive language that transcends aesthetics to become a shared identity, sought after and replicated by brands and consumers alike.
According to the 2024 Lyst Index report, every appearance by Rihanna and Rocky at high-profile events results in an immediate increase in searches related to their brands or garments . The phenomenon is most noticeable when they appear together: the coordination, the play of contrasts, and aesthetic coherence are perceived as organic, not imposed by stylists. This differentiates them from many other high-profile couples, where style is choreographed down to the last detail. In their case, authenticity seems to be born from a shared intimacy with fashion. “We don’t dress to be liked, but to be,” said A$AP Rocky during a talk at the Parsons School of Design.
Since her early years in the industry, Rihanna has shown that she's not inclined to fit into a mold. Her stylistic evolution is a journey that ranges from Caribbean pop to European haute couture, without losing her character or her instinct for anticipating changes in the industry. In 2019, the Barbadian artist made history by launching Fenty under the LVMH umbrella, becoming the first Black woman to lead a luxury brand within the French conglomerate. "I've always dressed for myself. If other people like it, great; if not, that's okay too," Rihanna told Vogue in 2022.
Stylized motherhood
This attitude has defined her approach to fashion: one of autonomy, freedom, and a keen sense of aesthetic risk. Added to this is her inclusive lingerie brand, Savage x Fenty, which has shifted traditional paradigms by presenting diverse bodies and non-binary genders.
Her pregnancy in 2022 marked a milestone in the way pregnant women can be represented, making her bump the focus of archival looks from Jean Paul Gaultier, Rick Owens, and Dior. “My body is doing something incredible. I'm not going to hide it under a big T-shirt,” she explained.

And in 2025, Rihanna did it again: during this year's Met Gala, she surprised everyone with a triumphant entrance, revealing that she is expecting her third child with A$AP Rocky . Before her official arrival, she was photographed wearing a Miu Miu ensemble—a dark gray blouse and fitted skirt—that clearly showed off her bump. Later, on the red carpet, she appeared smiling in a deconstructed ensemble, a cropped jacket, white polka-dot accessories, and an enormous cloche hat, confirming that her pregnancy is once again a statement, not a detail to hide.
Rakim Mayers, known as A$AP Rocky, has been one of the key figures in shattering the rigidity of menswear. From the A$AP Mob collective to his collaborations with Gucci, Dior Homme, and Raf Simons, Rocky has pushed the boundaries of streetwear, opening it up to the play of luxury. Femininity and vintage are two elements he introduces into his style of dress, which wins as many fans as detractors. “I like to play. I don't want clothes to limit me; I want them to express me,” he told GQ in a 2021 interview. His recent appointment as creative director of Ray-Ban Studio confirms that his relationship with fashion is not episodic, but structural.
In the same conversation with GQ, Rocky expressed his vision: “I want to create models that convey that: personality, contradiction, freedom.”
Since going public with their relationship in 2020, Rihanna and A$AP Rocky have positioned themselves as social media icons dubbed the fashion power couple . But theirs isn't just about clothes; it's about the synchronization of two aesthetic identities that nourish each other.
The 2021 Met Gala red carpet was a clear example. Rihanna, clad in a monumental black Balenciaga coat, and Rocky, in a patchwork ERL cape, presented a statement of stylistic and political unity: the glamorous and the everyday. On her birthday last February, Rihanna opted for a chocolate brown Saint Laurent ensemble, while Rocky wore a loose-fitting graphite gray suit. The couple planned their outfits to create an effect of complementary shadows, a choreography of textures beyond superficial aesthetics. “We inspire each other all the time. Sometimes we don’t need to talk about it, we just understand each other,” Rihanna said in a recent interview with Interview Magazine in January of this year.
No labels
One of the couple's greatest contributions to contemporary fashion is their ability to blur gender lines. Rocky has worn kilts, pearls, and silk blouses without being perceived as transgressive, but rather as natural. Rihanna, for her part, has worn masculine suits, combat boots, and oversized caps with straight, wide lines, without losing an ounce of sensuality. In an interview with iD Magazine (2023), A$AP Rocky was clear: "Fashion should be a safe place, not a prison of binary norms." This philosophy, shared with Rihanna, has made their public appearances a manifesto of expressive freedom that has impacted both young designers and global consumers.
From references to Pan-Africanism to nods to '90s hip-hop, her style of dress is also a memory. In a conversation with Edward Enninful, Rihanna explained: “I feel a debt to the Black women who challenged norms before me. Every time I wear something that isn't made to be 'flattering,' I think of them.” Rocky, for his part, has championed the use of recycled materials, collaborations with emerging designers, and capsule collections that benefit vulnerable communities. “I don't want fashion to be just for those who can afford it. I want it to inspire, to provoke, to transform.”
With two young children and a third on the way, in addition to their personal projects, they continue to shape a shared narrative where love, aesthetics, and resilience go hand in hand. On their outings in New York—often captured by street photographers—they sport everything from vintage tracksuits to Comme des Garçons archive pieces. For many, they're a masterclass in couple style; for others, a utopia achieved: the possibility of loving without diluting oneself, of dressing without limitations, of creating without compromise.
Rihanna sums it up this way in Vanity Fair (April 2025): “With him, I don't have to explain myself. I feel seen, and that's reflected in how we dress, too. Our clothes tell our story, without words, without filters.”
