With the onset of winter, the harsh reality faced by homeless people in Mendoza became apparent once again. In recent days, two men died of hypothermia: one in the city and the other in the department of San Martín.

In light of these events, the local Church questioned the lack of effective responses by the State and warned that, with a coordinated and comprehensive public policy, these deaths could have been avoided.

In a statement, the Archdiocesan Church expressed its deep concern over the annual recurrence of this problem and lamented the lack of preventive measures.

"Just a few days into winter, we have already lost two brothers who were living on the streets, victims of the cold," they stated. They also urged the authorities to take "concrete, feasible, urgent, and collective action, together with all of society."

They also reported that blanket and coat drives "are rendered fruitless when garbage trucks carry the blankets and coats our brothers and sisters spend the night with."

For more than a decade, the Church has been providing pastoral support in different areas of the province, they indicated in the statement.

In this context, last winter, thanks to the collaborative work of volunteers, state agencies, and the Municipality of Mendoza, they were able to set up a shelter to provide support during the coldest months.

At the end of the statement, they invited the Provincial and Municipal Governments "to review the approach and comprehensive support for homeless people so that resources can be appropriately directed to provide them with dignity and human advancement."
