The demolition of a 5,000-year-old menhir in Gamonal (Toledo) is being investigated.

The demolition of a 5,000-year-old menhir in Gamonal (Toledo) is being investigated.

The Government of Castilla-La Mancha and the Seprona are investigating the displacement and damage suffered by the Gamonal menhir , in Talavera de la Reina, which has been found collapsed and is a protected asset in the Catalogue of Protected Assets and Spaces of Talavera de la Reina, which is more than 5,000 years old .

The Castilla-La Mancha Regional Government has sent a request to the Talavera City Council requesting that it report on the damage sustained to this property and mark off the area within a minimum radius of five meters to prevent agricultural machinery or other hazardous activities from being carried out in its vicinity.

The Regional Government representative, David Gómez, pointed out that the first party responsible for protecting the menhir is the Talavera City Council , given that it is listed in its Catalogue of Protected Properties and Spaces with the highest protection. He explained that in early March, a response was received to the letter from Talavera's Councillor for Agriculture, Gerardo Sánchez, informing them of the rejection of the request to relocate the menhir, citing the fact that part of its historical value lies in its original location. In that letter, the Regional Government also recommended alternative measures to protect the property without having to relocate it.

The Regional Government is coordinating with the National Police (Seprona) to assess and investigate the damage to the menhir and, if necessary, sanction those responsible.
