The musical Maybe Happy Ending and Purpose triumph at the Tony Awards

'Maybe Happy Ending' was undoubtedly the big winner at the Tony Awards, considered the pinnacle of theatrical recognition in the United States. The musical won its category this Sunday, in addition to taking home the most awards at the Tony Awards, where the play 'Purpose' also shined.

The Tony Awards, held this Sunday at Radio City Music Hall in New York and hosted by actress Cynthia Erivo , declared the musical 'Maybe Happy Ending' the big winner of the night, taking home the award for best new musical and accumulating a total of six statuettes.

The musical 'Buena Vista Social Club' took home four awards, including Best Supporting Actress for Natalie Venetia ; Best Choreography for Patricia Delgado and Justin Peck ; and Best Sound Design for Jonathan Deans .

"As a Cuban-American and the daughter of immigrants, I would like to thank my entire family for their sacrifices and unconditional support in following my dreams and pursuing my artistic path," Delgado said upon accepting her award.

She also shone in the musical 'Sunset Boulevard' , which won the award for best musical revival and in which singer Nicole Scherzinger , who won the award for best musical actress tonight, performs.

In the category of best play, the winner was "Purpose," the play by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins , which was recognized this year with the Pulitzer Prize for best drama of the year.

In the acting field, Sarah Snook , known for her role in the series 'Succession', took home the Tony for best leading actress in a theater for her role in 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' , while Cole Escola was recognized as best actor in a theater for the historical comedy 'Oh, Mary!' , his first Tony in his Broadway debut.

The ceremony also marked a milestone for Latin music: Joy Huerta , of the duo Jesse & Joy , who was the first Mexican to be nominated for best original score for 'Real Women Have Curves' , although the award ultimately went to 'Maybe Happy Ending'.

The 78th Tony Awards also served to pay tribute to great musicals like "Hamilton" and have served to confirm the vitality of Broadway theater, which has managed to overcome the pandemic in the 2024-25 season with a record $1.89 billion in revenue and nearly 15 million attendees, according to the Broadway League.
