The Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII) has reported the death of a person in Spain who had advanced HIV infection and had not been vaccinated against MPOX due to MPOX—previously known as monkeypox.

This is what the ISCIII (Spanish National Institute of Cardiology) has indicated in its latest report on the epidemiological situation of MPOX cases in Spain. In the document, the ISCIII indicates that the case involved a man between 30 and 40 years of age who had HIV infection in an advanced stage of immunosuppression (AIDS stage).

Since the last update on June 17, 12 new cases have been reported , all of them from clade II. Thus, 273 cases have been reported so far this year, with Catalonia (115) and Madrid (103) being the regions with the most cases.

Since the outbreak began in April 2022, the Ministry of Health has reported a total of 8,811 confirmed cases of MPOX, originating in 17 Autonomous Communities. Ceuta and Melilla have not reported any cases during this period.

With these data, the ISCIII indicates in its latest report that no significant changes were observed in the clinical and epidemiological characteristics.
