MinCIT announces a call to consolidate Colombia as a leading astrotourism destination: how to apply?
As part of its tourism diversification and sustainability strategy, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism (MinCIT) announced the launch of the "Colombia: Astrotourism Destination" call for proposals. This call is aimed at local authorities, tourism service providers, associations, academia, and astronomy groups. The aim is to consolidate night sky observation experiences in the country.

Astrotourism in the country is in its initial stages of development, but with enormous potential, according to the Ministry of Information and Communications (MINCIT). The presence of dark, clear skies, along with the abundance of rural areas with low light pollution and the country's privileged geographic location, which allows for observing constellations in both the northern and southern hemispheres, represents a great opportunity to strengthen this tourism segment.
The Tatacoa Desert and Villa de Leyva stand out as some of the most popular astrotourism destinations among astronomy enthusiasts. However, the potential for developing this type of tourism also extends to departments such as La Guajira, Nariño, and Caquetá, among others.
This initiative seeks to identify up to 50 destinations across the country with optimal conditions for astrotourism , based on satellite data and local activities, and select the 10 territories with the greatest potential to receive specialized diagnosis, technical support, and public recognition.

This call also seeks to generate more income in rural communities. Photo: iStock

In addition to promoting innovative tourism experiences, this initiative also seeks to generate more income in rural communities by promoting experiences for the sector and strengthening community participation in environmental monitoring and astronomical data recording projects.
Please note that interested parties must complete the application form on the official platform by July 11, 2025. Applications will then be evaluated (maximum one per territory) and 50 destinations will be shortlisted. Finally, the 10 territories will be selected to receive comprehensive support to strengthen their astrotourism offerings.
