A man died last night after jumping out of a window to escape a building fire in Embrun, in the Hautes-Alpes region, firefighters announced Friday morning. Nine other people were injured, and emergency services are searching for other possible victims.

The fire broke out in the middle of the night, " impacting several apartments " in the residential building, firefighters explained in a statement. A man died after jumping out of a window, and emergency services are investigating whether other people were trapped inside. Of the nine injured, three are in relative emergency condition, and three police officers were affected by smoke.

No fewer than 80 firefighters were called to extinguish the blaze, which broke out around 1:50 a.m. in the center of this small, mid-altitude town of some 6,000 residents. Emergency medical services, the gendarmerie, and an Enedis team are also on the scene.
