OPINION - The fatal knife attack at a Nantes high school is yet another tragic example of the violence plaguing the educational system. Faced with this profound evil, it is urgent for schools to regain their role as a bulwark of civilization against savagery.

Another teenager who kills a teenager , fifty-seven stab wounds, after so many others. Violence is in the school with its procession of intimidation, threats, rackets, trafficking, assaults, rapes, murders. We harass, we hit, we injure, we rape, we stab, we kill in the school, at the school gates, students and teachers, for a yes, for a no, for drugs, for religion, for a reprimand, a word, a gesture, a refusal, a look, for nothing, because for too many children, adolescents, adults, violence has become a normal mode of expression. Certainly, the aggressors, the rapists, the harassers, a fortiori the killers, are still only a small minority in the ocean of the school population. But it is the consequences it has on the lives and psyche of all students, all teachers, all of society, and on the future that give the measure of the seriousness of this violence and not the statistics.
