The US president is pushing for a deal that would give Washington access to Ukrainian minerals in exchange for protection.

US President Donald Trump said on Monday, February 24, that an agreement with Ukraine on its minerals was "very close" during a discussion with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron , at the White House.

The Ukrainian government had earlier said that negotiations on the deal, which would give Washington access to Ukrainian minerals in exchange for protection and has been at the heart of tensions between the two countries, were in the "final" phase.
