- Leos Janacek Jenufa With Carole Wilson, Katarina Karneus, Agneta Eichenholz, Nicky Spence, Ales Briscein, Jan Martinik, Hanna Hipp, Evelin Novak, London Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, Sir Simon Rattle (conductor).
A regular at Janacek's operas, which he has conducted almost since his debut, Simon Rattle offers, after The Cunning Little Vixen and Katia Kabanova , a magnificent engraving of Jenufa . The conductor shows himself, as usual, to be a master of illumination, developing a score of luminous luxuriance, flexibility and an infinite variety of colors. A vision where lyricism and sensuality go hand in hand with a sense of distressing urgency. The title role of the production, Agneta Eichenholz's Jenufa (who replaces Asmik Grigorian, initially considered), a betrayed and dishonored young woman, deploys a magnificent and emotionally sustained singing line. She is under the influence of the impressive Sacristan of Katarina Karneus, an infanticide whose hallucinatory singing sends shivers down your spine. Opposite the two women, Nicky Spence's seductive and bad-boy Steva, whose high register hits the mark, as does Ales Briscein's lovelorn Laca. The supporting roles are of the same ilk and reinforce a Jenufa who immediately places herself among the leaders of the discography. Marie-Aude Roux
