Brit Awards 2025: Even before Saturday's ceremony, British singer Charli XCX wins the award for best songwriter

Singer Charli XCX has won the Brit Award for Songwriter of the Year, organisers of the prestigious British music awards announced on Wednesday (February 26), cementing her status as the frontrunner ahead of the ceremony scheduled for Saturday (March 1).

As is tradition, some awards are announced before the main event. After AG Cook won producer of the year earlier in the day, Charli XCX was crowned as well. The 32-year-old British singer, nominated in five categories this year, including artist and album of the year, is making her mark with her sixth album Brat , which popularized her hyper-pop music born in London raves.

Damian Christian, chair of the Brit 2025 committee, praised Charli XCX's work: "Charli's songwriting is original, bold and constantly innovative. She was already one of the UK's finest songwriters, but she took her craft to new heights with the global phenomenon 'brat'."

In February, Charli XCX won three Grammy Awards, including Best Dance/Electronic Album for Brat , an album whose title means "brat" in French. Upon its release in June, the critically acclaimed album quickly took off, becoming a cultural phenomenon celebrating audacity, authenticity and eccentric style.

It has become an ode to chaotic parties and a reflection of the questions of a generation, to the point that the summer of 2024 has been nicknamed "Brat Summer".

The neon green of the album cover has even been adopted by the campaign of Kamala Harris, the former Democratic candidate for the American presidency. In addition, the term "brat", which has taken the form of an aesthetic and a lifestyle, was elected word of the year 2024 by the British Collins dictionary.

Charli XCX thus joins an elite circle of winners of this prestigious award, alongside artists such as Ed Sheeran and Raye, who triumphed at the Brit Awards 2024 with six trophies.

The Brit Awards ceremony will be held on Saturday night at the O2 Arena in London. Expected performances by Sabrina Carpenter, Sam Fender and Teddy Swims will enhance the evening. Grammy-snubbed pop star Dua Lipa is nominated four times for her album Radical Optimism , as are jazz group Ezra Collective, rockers The Last Dinner Party and singer Myles Smith, who already won the Newcomer of the Year award. Finally, American pop star Sabrina Carpenter will receive an award in recognition of her success in 2024.
