Born on June 23, 1926 in Emilia-Romagna (north), the Italian sculptor , a geometer by training, had forged his style from the 1950s by materializing abstraction in monumental pieces - columns, spheres, cubes... - often split, corroded or torn.

"It is with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of Arnaldo Pomodoro, a master sculptor who sculpted the soul of Italy. His art brought Italian genius to the world," Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on X.

"The art world has lost one of its most influential, insightful and visionary voices," said Carlotta Montebello, director of the Milan-based foundation.

Winner of numerous international awards, Arnaldo Pomodoro had also taught in the art departments of prestigious American universities, such as Stanford and Berkeley.

His works have been exhibited worldwide, including at the Shanghai World Expo, UNESCO headquarters in Paris, the Young Museum in San Francisco, and the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
