Once upon a time there was the Flying Disco Watch

Once upon a time there was the Flying Disco Watch

A symbol of elegance among other vintage pieces, the “Disco Volante” design is back in fashion.

This is a fine example of retrofuturistic watch design: it was while thinking about the shape of the flying saucers of the extraterrestrial imagination of the 1950s that the Italian term "Disco Volante" was coined to describe watches with this recognizable shape at first glance on the wrist, that of the "Flying saucer" in English, with its fluid and curved curves.

As is often the case, shapes travel through the decades and brands. Disco Volante models can be seen from the 1950s, such as the Patek Philippe ref. 2595 in yellow gold, with its large bezel and sunburst dial, the DV 45541 from Universal Genève, or the reference DV5093 by Audemars Piguet. But they can also be found in the sixties, such as the Vacheron Constantin DV 6590 or the Eska Disco Volante. But it was even more so during the 1970s that the style flourished in the watchmaking world, driven by the "Space Age" imagination, when man had already conquered the moon and was now looking towards the stars. Such as the Jaeger LeCoultre Disco Volante and the Cartier Disco Volante, just 26 mm in diameter, created by Corum for Cartier in 1972.

Closer to home, the young vintage-inspired brand Furlan Marri unveiled three elegant neo-vintage Disco Volante watches for men last summer, with three dial color variations: Havana, Celeste, and Verde.

This summer, it's women's turn to be able to wear this design on their wrists again, with the brand new Lady Volante created by the French brand March LA.B. "I've always loved the Disco Volante ," says Alain Marhic, founder of the brand. "Basically, watchmaking cycles are like those of fashion. At some point, all brands start making the same style of watches. This design came naturally when we thought about creating a new watch for women. Everyone has made them in the past, they are everywhere. We adopted it to our codes."

The result: a completely round jewel watch, from the shape of its case to the crown and the pin buckle of its bracelet, with a 30 mm round PVD gold case. 10 mm thick, assembled in France, it beats to the rhythm of a Ronda 762 quartz caliber. Its latest fashion asset: it is available on a leather strap, but also in a necklace version, starting at €845.
