Sassari breaks the deadlock with a superb Johnson, Cantù slumps. Steward isn't enough in Trento: Cremona wins.
The sixth day of the championship continues with Sassari, who, after five straight losses, unlocks the LBA, thrashing Cantù (100-84) at the PalaSerradimigni. Johnson (top scorer with 33 points) and Marshall (24) were decisive, as Cantù loses for the fourth time in six games and suffers 16 turnovers. Cremona wins at home against Trento, 92-83, enjoying the Italians (Veronesi 23, Casarin 10) and proving capable of responding to the difficulties within the match. Steward (22 points) isn't enough for Trento.
Sassari welcomed new coach Veljko Mrsic, who was in the stands due to registration issues, with a convincing victory. After a balanced start, with both teams making a strong showing in the paint, Sassari ran out on an 11-0 run, capitalizing on the excellent shooting of a strong Johnson and a three-pointer from Marshall (23-14 in the 8th minute). The Sardinians continued to dominate the second quarter, creating solid shots and responding to a strong entry from Moraschini, who scored on a pull-up, with another three-pointer from Marshall to make it 41-30 in the 15th minute. Brienza's men continued to struggle to find their offensive rhythm, and they turned the ball over repeatedly. The situation for Cantù further complicated when Ceron (a three-pointer and two free throws) and McGlynn, who dominated the rebounds, recovered the ball, and scored the two points that brought the visitors within 21 (55-34 near the 20th minute). The home team started the second half strongly, enjoying the hot shots of Marshall and Johnson, who established a 26-point lead (67-41 at 24'). The Lombardy team responded with pride, with a three-pointer from Sneed, cuts from Ballo, and a three-pointer from Bowden, bringing the score back to 11 (77-66 at 31'). Sassari continued to respond from the arc with Buie and Johnson, nullifying baskets from De Nicolao and the usual Bowden (85-68 at 33'). Dinamo ran riot in the final minutes, benefiting from the usual inspired Marshall and Johnson from the arc, and unlocked their first championship win.
Sassari: Johnson 33, Marshall 24, McGlynn 11
Cantù: Sneed 16, Gilyard 15, Ballo 12
Vanoli secured their fourth league win, proving to be a tough and dynamic team. Another strong performance from Veronesi, who finished with 23 points. The first minutes of the game were point-to-point. Trento was the first to step up the pace and attempted to break away with a 13-0 run, built on triples from Jakimovski and Niang, which gave them a 10-point lead (11-21 in the 7th minute). A pair of drives from Casarin sparked Vanoli. The former Venezia player took center stage in the second quarter, scoring on drives and setting up Jones from beyond the arc and Burns, mostly in the paint. Burns scored the basket that tied the score at 29 in the 13th minute. Brotto's men completed the comeback, benefiting from a strong run from Veronesi, who scored a pair of shots from 6 and 75 to launch his team to a 7-point lead (41-34 in the 16th minute). The visitors responded with a Steward layup and Bayehe's moves in the paint, which brought Aquila back into the game, trailing by one at halftime (45-44 in the 20th minute). Vanoli emerged stronger from the locker room and capitalized on some lapses by Dolomiti Energia, scoring 3-pointers with Willis and Anigbogu, as well as Veronesi, Durham, and Ndiaye all closing in on the basket, building a double-digit lead (57-46 in the 24th minute). Trento stayed in the game, feeding Bayehe in the paint and capitalizing on Steward's talent, who responded with a drive to the basket, following the usual Casarin and Burns (69-66 in the 30th minute). Durham attempted to put the match to bed with a pair of talented baskets that made it 76-68 in the 34th minute, but Steward and a very solid Niang had other ideas and, from beyond the arc, kept Aquila alive (80-77 in the 37th minute). Anigbogu's rebounding power gave the home team six free throws (86-79 with just under two minutes remaining). Niang and Steward missed subsequent shots, and Cremona celebrated its fourth LBA victory.
Cremona: Veronesi 23, Anigbogu 13, Durham 11
Trento: Steward 22, Bayehe, Jogela 12, Niang 10
