The former morgue on Via Sforza will have the classrooms of the Statale: a 6 million euro intervention

The historic building at via Francesco Sforza 38 will be redeveloped by the University of Milan and will house classrooms, spaces for the third mission and other student services. The recovery of the complex, which the Superintendency has declared to be of artistic interest, is initiated by a resolution approved by the Palazzo Marino council, with which the Municipality of Milan, owner of the property, has decided to grant it free of charge to the university in surface rights for a period of 50 years.
The measure, proposed by the Councilor for Budget, State Property and Extraordinary Housing Plan, Emmanuel Conte, allows the start of the restoration and enhancement project presented by the University, which will allow not only to preserve the architectural and cultural value of the building by adapting it to modern needs, but to restore its original configuration, with a courtyard plan, as shown in the historical plans, with the construction of a new block in the area behind the building.
New study rooms"With this new important development, for which we thank the Municipality of Milan, the Statale adds a new piece to the work of repurposing its central hub - comments the rector of the University, Marina Brambilla - further expanding the spaces for students, dedicated to educational activities of study and aggregation, and for third mission activities. The University confirms itself as an important social player in the process of urban regeneration that Milan is going through through the redevelopment and repurposing of historic buildings deeply connected to the city and at the service of students and citizens".
“Another historic building that, thanks to the contribution of the State University - says Councilor Emmanuel Conte - not only sees its architectural value safeguarded, but finds a new and important role in the urban economy of Milan, which has students and researchers as protagonists. The Administration manages a complex set of assets that, over time, lose and regain functions and can, through collaboration between institutions and attention to common opportunities, respond to today's changes and needs, for work, study, social life”.
Investment of 6.2 millionThe redevelopment project will meet the growing educational and operational needs of the central hub of the University, with the creation of welcoming and functional environments for students and teachers, classrooms and other spaces necessary for carrying out academic activities. Procedures to identify the operator who will carry out the first interventions will be started by the end of June. The completion of the work is scheduled for 2028. The overall investment estimate is 6.2 million euros, 1.8 million of which is financed by the Ministry of Education.
The start of the redevelopment of the complex at Via Sforza 38 is part of the general project for the renovation and re-functionalization of the central hub of the Statale, which also includes the important renovation of the central library at Via Festa del Perdono, currently underway, the upcoming reopening of the student residence at Via Santa Sofia and the completion of the renovation work at the headquarters at Via Mercalli. The start of the major energy requalification work at Ca' Granda is also planned for next autumn.
With the restoration of the building at via Sforza 38, once used as a morgue and now empty, the renewal of the area will also be completed, after the opening of the Sforza stop on M4 and the superficial arrangement of the square, introducing services of general interest dedicated to university students who use the city.
