What is the Japanese beetle and why is it becoming a nightmare for Northern Italy?

Popillia japonica Newman (Popillia or Japanese beetle ) is an extremely polyphagous scarab beetle that causes huge economic losses and requires high control costs. Although currently rather limited in its distribution, P. japonica represents a serious threat to Europe.
