2025 Oscars. No Mexicans after 14 consecutive years of nominations

LOS ANGELES.— The 97th Academy Awards will be held at the legendary Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California, this coming Sunday, March 2, 2025 .
However, these 2025 Oscars will be remembered for the lack of Mexican presence, since after 14 consecutive years of nominations, no representative of Mexico appears among the candidates to take home a golden statuette.
Although we may possibly see Adriana Paz walking the red carpet for her role in the film “Emilia Pérez” , it is worth remembering that the Mexican actress is not nominated in any category, and the film in which she acted alongside Karla Sofía Gascón is a French production.

The 2025 Oscars mark the breaking of a streak of 14 consecutive years with Mexican presence.
Let us remember that since 2011, when Alejandro González Iñárritu's “Biutiful” was nominated in the then category of 'Foreign Language Film' and until last year, with the assistance of Rodrigo Prieto for his photography direction in “Los asesinos de la luna”, the national hosts had sought the Academy Award.
But this 2025, the so-called 'Three Amigos' (González Iñárritu, Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuarón), as well as cinematographers Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki and Rodrigo Prieto, strong cards in previous ceremonies, did not have a film released last year, so their absence was expected.

The same is the case of sound specialists such as Martín Hernández (“Birdman”), José Antonio García (“Argo”) Carlos Cortés, Jaime Baksht and Michelle Couttolenc (“The Sound of Metal”), another branch where Mexicans have stood out.
Since 1942, Mexican talent has had more than 80 nominations and won nearly 30 awards , which is practically one in every three opportunities won.
In this century there has been a Mexican representative almost every year, only having absences in : 2002, 2004, 2006, 2009 and 2010 and now in 2025.

Since 2011, the year in which he had attended uninterruptedly, there had been around 40 nominations and 16 statuettes, shared between Alfonso Cuarón with five; Alejandro González Iñárritu with four, Guillermo del Toro and Emmanuel Lubezki, with three and Cortes, Baksht and Couttolenc, with one.
While during this last period three representatives had managed to sneak into the nomination : Demian Bichir (“A Better Life”), Marina de Tavira and Yalitza Aparicio (both for “ROMA”), as well as Mayes Rubeo, costume specialist (“Jojo Rabbit”).
