Annual report reveals human rights deficiencies in Yucatan

MÉRIDA.- The urgent need to address the poor conditions in which many municipal prisons operate is still part of the ongoing issues in Yucatán regarding Human Rights .
Although it must be acknowledged that some City Councils have already improved this year, said María Guadalupe Méndez Correa , State Ombudsman, when presenting her annual report to the Legislative Branch .
In light of the violent events that occurred in recent days, the president of the State Human Rights Commission called for a reminder that:
“Violence has never been and will never be the answer; social justice must be our goal, so that peace endures and continues to be our main pillar and national hallmark .”

Unlike in previous years, when this annual report was presented at least to representatives of the three branches of government , the armed forces, police forces and mayors, as well as representatives of various sectors of society, on this occasion the absence of the state executive was notable.

This report revealed that in 2024 they assisted 2,019 people, classified 254 complaints as alleged violations of human rights, and issued 152 precautionary measures, although only 88 were accepted.
As always, the institutions against which they complained the most were the Secretariat of Public Security , the State Attorney General's Office , the Secretariat of Education , Health and some City Councils.
Among the municipalities with urgent problems due to their prison conditions, I mention: Izamal , Dzoncauich, Tecph, Dzan, Abala, Tixmehuac, Chacsinkin, Río Lagartos , Kinchil and Tahdziu .
