Independiente explains the violent acts at the Copa Sudamericana

Beyond speaking out against violence of any kind and regardless of its origin, Club Atlético Independiente explained what happened on Wednesday night during the Copa Sudamericana Round of 16 match against U de Chile at the Libertadores de América Stadium, which led to the definitive suspension of the match following attacks on the stadium between fans of both clubs.

In a statement, the Argentine team stated that the first signs of aggression occurred in the stands assigned to Chilean fans, although they admitted that local cheerleading groups reacted moments later, in another act condemned by the sports institution.

"From the very beginning, the Club activated safety protocols, coordinated with the authorities present and the tournament organizers, and provided medical assistance to the injured in full compliance with the CONMEBOL manual," said El Rojo (the nickname of the Argentine club).

While they emphasize that they will work tirelessly to ensure that each person responsible is identified and punished for the attacks seen in the media and on social media, they will also seek compensation from those responsible and third parties for damages caused to the property, in addition to requesting that the right of admission be applied to individuals they labeled as criminals disguised as fans.

"To our members, we understand the concern and pain caused by what happened. Our commitment is to take care of our people," the club added.

On behalf of the University of Chile, the club's president, Michael Clark, assured that of the 14 people who were taken to the hospital as a result of these events, only four remain and by the end of this Thursday it is likely that only two will remain in these medical centers.
