Rodrigo Pacheco makes history at the Mexican Open

Mexican tennis experienced a historic day at the Mexican Open in Acapulco . Rodrigo Pacheco , at just 18 years old, achieved what no Mexican had done in the last 14 years: winning a singles match in this tournament. The last time a Mexican player won a match in Acapulco was in 2011, when Santiago González did so.

This triumph, which not only puts Pacheco back in the eyes of world tennis, also represents his first victory on the ATP circuit. By defeating Australian Alexander Vukic 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(4), Rodrigo made it clear that the future of Mexican tennis has a young, ambitious face with great fighting ability.
“I have no words to describe what I feel. My stomach is full of butterflies , everything happened so fast, but above all, the support of the Mexican public was incredible . I felt how they supported me from the first point to the last. I am very happy to achieve something so great at home,” she said.
Facing Vukic was not easy. With each point, Rodrigo Pacheco kept his focus, ignoring the pressure of possibly exiting the tournament.
“I tried to keep playing point by point, not thinking about what was coming. I knew I had to be aggressive if I wanted to win and that helped me stay calm,” said the young tennis player after the match.
Now, Rodrigo Pacheco is preparing for what will be his biggest challenge yet: facing one of the tournament's big favorites, Norwegian Casper Ruud , who was a finalist in last year's edition and has won the affection of the Mexican fans.
“Playing against someone of his level, who is one of the best in the world, is all about learning for me. I know that the probability of winning is low, but facing an idol like him is a huge motivation . These types of matches make me grow a lot,” he said with humility and determination.
The match against Ruud promises to be one of the most exciting of the day, but Rodrigo Pacheco has undoubtedly already left an important mark on this tournament. The Mexican fans, who did not hesitate to give him their support throughout his match against Vukic, are more than ready to cheer on the young tennis player in his clash against the Norwegian giant.
For Pacheco, this result is just the beginning of a career that, although full of challenges, promises unforgettable moments.
“For me, it’s all about winning. I don’t know if I’ll win, but I’m going to go out and give my best . The match will help me throughout my career. Playing against a player of his quality makes me feel very motivated to keep improving.”
Without a doubt, the future is bright for this young talent who today made history and showed Mexico that the new generation of tennis players is more than ready to shine on the biggest stages of the white sport.
