Sterilizations are more accessible in Yucatan: this is their cost

In Yucatan, free sterilization days organized by the government have had a positive impact on the community.
In 12 municipalities, 521 dogs and cats have benefited , preventing the birth of 7,294 puppies that, had they not been sterilized, would have faced an uncertain fate.
These actions were recently highlighted by the state government.
In addition, the Mérida City Council has joined forces with free campaigns in police stations and neighborhoods, where residents can access sterilizations for a recovery fee of only $100.
In the framework of the International Day of Animal Sterilization, which is celebrated on the last Tuesday of February, this practice has become increasingly accessible thanks to initiatives such as the municipal Esterimóvil and programs promoted by the government.
Many private veterinary clinics offer this service, contributing significantly to the control of overpopulation and the well-being of animals, preventing them from ending up on the streets.
In an interview , Roberto Reyes Castillo, president of the College of Veterinary Doctors , highlighted the importance of raising awareness about animal overpopulation, especially in dogs and cats.
He also stressed the need to control the domestic population to prevent the abandonment of pets and the proliferation of homeless animals.
Sterilization is not only key for population control , but also to prevent serious diseases in pets.
In females, for example, it reduces the risk of breast cancer, uterine infections, cysts and bloody discharge during heat. In males, castration (orchiectomy) prevents testicular cancer.
The benefits of spaying are numerous. In addition to preventing overpopulation, spayed animals tend to live longer, do not go into heat every six months, and in the case of dogs, are less likely to wander off in search of a mate. They also tend to become more docile and sociable.
Although it is mistakenly believed that sterilization improves animal behavior, Dr. Reyes Castillo clarified that, although hormonal changes following this procedure can reduce aggressiveness and the tendency to mark territory , behavior depends on multiple factors.
She also noted that some animals may gain weight after sterilization, although this can be controlled with proper nutrition and regular exercise.
It is recommended to sterilize animals from six months of age, before they reach sexual maturity, but the decision should also be based on their general health.
In short, sterilization is a safe and beneficial practice, both for animals and the community. It is an act of responsibility that reflects a commitment to animal welfare.
Dogs and cats are not street animals, and abandonment is never the solution. Responsible ownership is key to creating a healthier environment for all.
