Trump shakes up the world order in his first 100 days in office

In his first 100 days in office , US President Donald Trump has pushed through a series of actions that have upended the rules-based world order that Washington helped build after World War II.

Since taking office, Trump has launched an unprecedented global tariff war , rejected traditional US foreign aid, publicly disparaged NATO allies , and adopted the Russian narrative regarding the invasion of Ukraine.

He has also made controversial statements about the possible annexation of Greenland , the return of the Panama Canal , and Canada becoming the 51st state of the United States.

Alarm in the world

These decisions have generated alarm abroad and among domestic critics, who warn of signs of democratic backsliding in the United States .

These include Trump's verbal attacks on judges , pressure on universities , and the transfer of migrants to a notorious prison in El Salvador as part of a broader deportation campaign.

“What we're seeing is a major disruption in world affairs,” warned Dennis Ross, a former Middle East negotiator for both Democratic and Republican administrations. “ No one is sure at this point what to make of what's happening or what comes next,” he added.

For his part, Elliott Abrams, a conservative who served under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush, noted: “Trump is much more radical now than he was eight years ago. I've been surprised .”

Partners approach China

Current and former officials , foreign diplomats and independent analysts consulted by Reuters agree that the prospects of a dramatic change in Trump's approach are slim.

Instead, many anticipate that several countries will make lasting adjustments to their relations with the United States to protect themselves from the uncertainty caused by current U.S. foreign policy.

Speculation has grown that the deterioration in relations could lead US partners to move closer to China, at least economically.
