Art collector and critic Ramón López Quiroga passed away last Monday night, confirmed the López Quiroga Gallery.
Known for his work as a gallery owner, López Quiroga's influence was also felt in the dissemination and promotion of photography and contemporary art.
The French Pantheon of San Joaquín announced on its website that the remains of Ramón López Quiroga were removed from one of its viewing rooms for cremation at noon yesterday.
In 1980, he founded the Mexico City gallery that bears his name, which exhibits contemporary art. The gallery has featured works by artists such as Francisco Toledo, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Roberto Matta, Sebastião Salgado, Rufino Tamayo, Miguel Castro Leñero, Irma Palacios, and Vicente Rojo.
The collector always loved photography. Since he was a child, he had a photo lab and took classes, although he never considered himself a professional in the field.
López Quiroga, together with Alexis Fabry, director of the Parisian publishing house Toluca Project, was responsible for the Spanish/French edition of the book Mexico City , which brings together photographic work by 22 artists.
In 2015, the exhibition Wrecks and Embers: Mexico in the Photographic Collection of Ramón López Quiroga was displayed, bringing together some 400 pieces by authors such as Romualdo García, Tina Modotti, Agustín Jiménez, Nacho López, Manuel Álvarez Bravo and Graciela Iturbide.
