Book Fair 2025: Today's Recommended Books, May 1st

Labor Day is usually presented with a vast array of activities, talks, and diverse presentations to take advantage of the holiday and not miss a thing. This Thursday , Federico Axat, María Dueñas, Julia Navarro, Camila Sosa Villada, Claudia Piñeiro, Guillermo Martínez, Enzo Maqueira, and Tomás Balmaceda will be there. At the Clarín Ñ Cultural Space at 4:00 PM, writer and academic Martín Kohan will discuss with critic Alejandra Rodríguez Ballester the topic " Remembering Childhood under the Dictatorship, Writing for Children ." An hour later, Gustavo Sierra will present the book "Berliner, the Avenger of Treblinka," in conversation with Tato Young about the Treblinka concentration camp, where 850,000 Jews died and only one Nazi, the man killed by the Argentine-Polish Meir Berliner.

Bookfluencers Meeting

The Bookfluencers Meeting will take place at noon, offering a host of activities this year to keep up with this phenomenon that's here to stay. At 1:30 p.m., Anto Romano and Sol Freitas (Taiyo) will discuss graphic novels, comics, and manga in the Victoria Ocampo room.

At 2:00 p.m., young people interested in the exact sciences have a chance to learn about the Balseiro Institute from the inside. "Come and see what it's like to study at the Balseiro Institute and work at the Bariloche Atomic Center. You'll discover that scholarships are available so you can study Physics and Telecommunications, Mechanical, or Nuclear Engineering at an internationally renowned center with excellent career prospects," they invite. It will be held at Zona Explora.

A little later, at 2:30 p.m., writer Federico Axat will present his latest novel in the Julio Cortázar room in a dialogue with Florencia Pescetto, while at 3 p.m., in Zona Futuro, authors Nubia Bado, Julia Coria, Adriana Riva, Carina Maguregui, Nuri Abramowicz, Martina Antognini and M. Conur will discuss Las mujeres del libro (Women in Books ): a space for dialogue and inspiration that focuses on the vibrant and transformative voice of contemporary Argentine literature.

Women Writers' Afternoon

The afternoon continues to focus on women writers. At 4:00 p.m., one of the most anticipated international guests will arrive: Spanish author María Dueñas , who will present her new novel , "Por si un día volvemos," in the José Hernández room. And at 4:30 p.m., there will be an Ida Vitale Marathon : at 103 years old, Ida Vitale is one of the living voices of her generation, having seen and met authors from all over the continent. "We are honoring her in life with a reading marathon in which poets and artists of all kinds will read aloud her poems and excerpts from her book," the invitation is given. Emilio Jirado Naon will coordinate the event at Zona Futuro.

Five notable activities are vying for attention at 5:30 p.m. The Adolfo Bioy Casares Room will feature the presentation of the legendary book El pequeño Nicolás , by the French authors René Goscinny and Jean-Jacques Sempé , organized by the French Embassy in Argentina, Libros del Zorzal, and Riverside Agency.

In the Carlos Gorostiza room, at the same time, the Spanish Julia Navarro , another of this year's star guests, will talk with Luis Novaresio about her book The Boy Who Lost the War , while in the Alejandra Pizarnik room, Juan Cruz Ruiz and Claudia Piñeiro will present the book The Secret and Passion of Literature: Writers in the First Person, from Borges to Almudena Grandes.

In the name of God

Always at 5:30 p.m., journalist Paula Bistagnino will present her powerful book , "Te serviré," about Opus Dei in the Río de la Plata region, in the Tulio Halperín Donghi room. Actress and writer Camila Sosa Villada will discuss her new book , "La traición de mi lengua," in the José Hernández room.

The final part of the day also has much to offer. At 7:00 PM, the Dialogue of Argentine Writers continues with a panel dedicated to technology: Can an AI write with the depth of a human being or create literature? An open debate on what the algorithm isn't capable of, with Claudia Piñeiro, Guillermo Martínez, Enzo Maqueira, and Tomás Balmaceda participating in the Domingo Faustino Sarmiento Room.

Literary suburbs

The day will close at 8:30 p.m. with three activities of interest: Literature of the Conurbation : Voices from the Periphery, Identity, Diversity and Representation, within the framework of the Dialogue of Writers of Argentina, with Juan Diego Incardona, Leticia Rivas, Claudio Zeiger and coordinated by Walter Lezcano in the Domingo Faustino Sarmiento room.

Pedro Saborido and Adrián Lakerman also discuss humor in the Victoria Ocampo Room, and the presentation of the book Borges, Secret Texts and False Attributions in the Alejandra Pizarnik Room.
