Morocco: art, identity and memory
▲ In the studio of French-Moroccan artist Margaux Derhy, which she founded in 2022 in Sidi Rbat, her father's hometown, women come to create art with a purpose. Using textiles and old photographs, they explore their family heritage before they left the country in the 1960s, and transform sepia-toned portraits and scenes into large silk and linen canvases that they then sell. The studio seeks to promote the socioeconomic emancipation of Moroccan women in rural areas, who are particularly affected by poverty, unpaid work, and lack of opportunities. Photo: AFP
