Dominican Republic and Mexico celebrate 137th anniversary of diplomatic relations

During a cultural and entertainment-filled evening, the 137th anniversary of relations between the Dominican Republic and Mexico was commemorated.
The celebration took place in the auditorium of the Rosario Castellanos Bookstore , part of the Fondo de Cultura Económica, where guests enjoyed a packed concert by Dominican soprano Pura Tyson.
Speeches by Raquel Serur Smeke, Undersecretary for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Juan Bolívar Díaz, Dominican Ambassador to Mexico , who hosted the meeting with his wife, Ada Wiscovitch.
Serur highlighted the historical ties, warm bilateral relations and cooperation, and shared values between the two nations, as well as Mexican trade and investment, highlighting the Dominican Republic as Mexico 's largest partner in the Caribbean.
The official recalled President Juan Bosch 's visit to Mexico and the Mexican support he received when he was overthrown shortly afterward, as well as the solidarity with Dominican exiles since the Trujillo dictatorship.
He also recalled that President Luis Abinader attended the inauguration of President Claudia Sheinbaum in October.
For his part, Ambassador Díaz pointed out that Dominican-Mexican ties began long before diplomatic relations, that as early as 1827 Mexico welcomed the illustrious patriot José Núñez de Cáceres as an exile, who gave the first cry for independence of the Dominican Republic , declared a Meritorious Citizen of the State of Tamaulipas.
In 1833, the Dominican Simón de Portes, grandfather of the Mexican president Emilio Portes Gil (1928-30), was received.
The Dominican representative also recalled the fact that it was the Congress of the Dominican Republic that first proclaimed Mexican statesman Benito Juárez as a Distinguished Citizen of the Americas in 1867.
He elaborated on multiple expressions of Mexican solidarity and current relations, highlighting that 115,000 Mexicans visited the country last year, and that there are currently 30 weekly flights from Mexico City to Santo Domingo and Punta Cana, and between Cancún and Punta Cana.

Soprano Pura Tyson 's concert , “ Two Peoples, One Song, ” featured 15 performances of songs by renowned Mexican and Dominican composers , such as Solamente una Vez, Te Quiero Dijiste, and Besos Robados, from Mexico .
And Quisqueya, A Spring for the World, and Donde Podré Gritarte que te Quiero, from the Dominican Republic . She also performed the song "Y" by Dominican composer Mario de Jesús, who spent the second half of his life enjoying great success in Mexico . After a rousing final ovation, she closed with the legendary Dominican song "Por Amor."
Soprano Tyson was accompanied by Dominican musicians Porfirio Mateo, pianist, and percussionist José Luis Ureña. The concert was warmly received by both Dominican and Mexican audiences, who approached the artists during the cocktail reception to congratulate them.
