The castle located on the banks of a river is considered a sublime viewpoint on the Costa del Sol

The castle located on the banks of a river is considered a sublime viewpoint on the Costa del Sol

When someone thinks of the Costa del Sol, sunny days, fascinating beaches along the Mediterranean , and the incredible atmosphere that characterizes one of the most tourist-oriented areas of Spain usually come to mind. The reality is that this area of Andalusia hides many architectural wonders that often go unnoticed by domestic and international tourists visiting the province of Málaga.

One of those gems steeped in centuries of history is hidden in one of the most popular tourist towns on the entire Costa del Sol , Fuengirola. In addition to boasting spectacular sandy beaches lapped by turquoise waters, this Malaga town also boasts one of the greatest monuments on the entire coast: Sohail Castle. This imposing fortress rises meters above sea level and sits next to a fast-flowing river, creating a sublime setting that makes the town even more incredible.

Sohail Castle has stood on the right bank of the Fuengirola River, on a 38-meter-high hill, for over a millennium. This fascinating fort dates back to the 10th century, when, during the Muslim era, it was decided to build a fortress on the remains of an ancient Roman settlement (the Punic Empire also passed through this part of the town). Initially, it was just a small citadel, but in the 12th century, the Almoravids expanded the complex to the enormous size it has today.

In 1485, it was conquered by the Christians, leaving the castle severely damaged. Successive reconstructions have given the castle its current appearance, having suffered considerable damage throughout history, such as during the War of Independence. Built mostly of stone, this sublime fortress has housed various sections of the Spanish Army, although today it is municipal property and can be visited.

Anyone interested can visit this impressive fort from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 a.m. (it closes daily at 2:00 p.m. and on weekends at 6:00 p.m.). It's certainly one of the Costa del Sol's great monuments to visit, as this stretch of Andalusian coastline boasts not only wonderful beaches to relax on, but also splendid treasures like Sohail Castle.
