Dutch people increasingly cycle for fun, but the annoyances are increasing

A bike ride is more popular than ever. Almost one in three recreational cyclists has cycled more often or further in the past three years. This is evident from research by the National Cycling Platform Foundation and the ANWB.
Relaxation is the main reason, but the relaxing rides are often ruined by bad road surfaces and antisocial behaviour.
In total, millions of Dutch people get on their bikes for fun every year: no less than 532 million recreational rides are made each year. Of all Dutch people over the age of 16, 70 percent make such a trip at some point, and a third even do so weekly. The e-bike is on the rise here; almost half of recreational cyclists use one. The most popular distance? Between 15 and 30 kilometers.
Cyclists mainly mention relaxation (46 percent), the need to be outside (43 percent) and their health (32 percent) as reasons to climb on the saddle. A new or better bike also appears to be a big motivation to cycle.
However, not everyone has taken up cycling. More than one in five recreational cyclists are actually taking it easier. Lack of time, poorer health or the lack of a good bike are the most frequently mentioned reasons.
Although the Netherlands receives an average of 8 for its cycle paths, it is not all roses and moonshine. Poor road surfaces and narrow paths are the biggest frustrations among cyclists. The behaviour of others on the cycle path, such as antisocial driving or large speed differences, is also often mentioned as a disruptive factor.
Previous studies by the ANWB and the Fietsplatform already called for more attention to recreational cycling. According to the organisations, investing in cycling infrastructure is not only good for cyclists themselves, but also contributes to health, sustainability and liveability in society.
