Good news on Notes from Poland's future – thank you!

We are pleased to announce that Notes from Poland has been saved – for now – thanks to our readers and a new partnership with the EFC Foundation, writes our editor-in-chief, Daniel Tilles.

At the start of April, we informed you that our main source of funding, a grant from the US-based National Endowment for Democracy (NED), was likely to be brought to a premature end and we appealed to you, our readers, for support.

We are so grateful for your generous response: 396 readers donated (including 78 who began new monthly donations) in April, bringing in a total of just under PLN 47,000.

While this was not enough to replace the funds from NED that we have indeed now lost, your help did give us vital breathing space. Knowing that we had additional support allowed us more time to pursue other funding options while continuing to operate normally.

Indeed, if we could count on this kind of support from readers on an ongoing basis, we would become completely reader-supported and would not need any external sources of funding.

As expected, NED has now formally cut short our grant following a final, partial payment, with no possibility of future renewal. Despite the difficult circumstances, we would like to place on record our gratitude to NED for being such a supportive partner over the past five years.

Moving forward, we are delighted and proud to announce a new partnership that – together with our readers' support – has secured Notes from Poland's future in the medium term.

The EFC Foundation , a Polish NGO devoted to strengthening democracy in Poland and central Europe, has agreed to support our work during the period in which we have lost the previously agreed but now withdrawn NED funds. We are immensely grateful to the EFC Foundation for stepping in at the last minute to help us and we are excited about working with them.

Above all, I am so pleased personally that our small, close-knit team can continue working together to provide our readers with regular, up-to-the-minute news and analysis from Poland in English.

But the future remains a challenge for us as a non-profit media outlet committed to delivering high-quality, free-to-access content without being held to any political or business interests.
