Leased Car and Car Insurance. A Guide for Leaseholders
The guide primarily draws attention to the fact that, since – throughout the duration of the leasing agreement – the leased vehicle remains the property of the leasing company and the lessee is only its user, the decisive vote on the insurance of such a vehicle belongs to the lessor.
What does this mean in practice for the user (lessee)? "First of all, it should be remembered that both the scope of vehicle insurance, i.e. whether it is to be e.g. only third party liability insurance or a so-called motor package (third party liability + AC + possibly other voluntary risks, such as e.g. roadside assistance or auto windows), as well as the choice of a specific insurance company where the policy is to be purchased - will, as a rule, be decided by the lessor (detailed requirements in this respect may be specified in the leasing agreement)" - we read in the guide.
