Will the hot summer return? The forecast leaves no doubt. An IMWM expert discusses changes.
- IMWM forecasts that warmer air will reach Poland after August 15.
This summer has been surprisingly cold and rainy, with high temperatures occurring only sporadically. Experts from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management predict that the situation will change towards the end of the summer holidays. What exactly do the IMWM meteorological models predict?
Summer weather. Why is it so cold in Poland? The cold air mass that lingers over Poland is responsible for the current weather. As Artur Surowiecki from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) explained in an interview with Wirtualna Polska, this situation is due to the presence of low-pressure systems that dominate Central Europe. These atmospheric phenomena bring not only lower temperatures but also more frequent precipitation.
The expert emphasizes that although temperatures don't differ significantly from the long-term norm, they feel lower due to wind and rain . "In recent years, heat has been present for a maximum of 10 to 15 days. This year is a bit different – temperatures are around the long-term norm, but we have a very cool zone for this time of year," Surowiecki notes. The coldest summers in Poland were recorded in the 1970s and 1980s.
August weather. Scandinavia is battling the heat, while Poland is taking a break from the heat. While residents of the North are grappling with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, Poland is experiencing a moderate summer. In the coming days, temperatures will reach between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius. Experts say these are comfortable conditions, especially compared to the extreme weather conditions currently being observed in Scandinavia.
For residents of Norway or Sweden, even 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit) constitutes a heatwave. Meanwhile, in Poland, such temperatures are considered pleasant and safe. The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) urges people to appreciate a brief respite from extreme conditions, as the weather conditions in many European countries are much more severe.
When will it warm up and summer temperatures return?According to the current meteorological models from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management , significant changes are not expected until after August 15th. In the second half of the month, warmer air from the south of the continent is expected to reach Poland, and a high-pressure system will develop over Europe, bringing stabilization to the weather.
Artur Surowiecki emphasizes that we can expect more sunny days and a lower probability of precipitation. "The weather will be more predictable – the kind we love when on vacation," the expert explains. Importantly, August is usually warmer than July, which further increases the chances of a summer-like ending to the holidays.
What will the next few days bring? A moderate summer with local thunderstorms. The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) does not predict any significant changes over the next 5-6 days. Temperatures will remain moderate, and polar air will continue to flow into the country from the west. However, occasional storms and heavier rainfall cannot be ruled out, especially in southeastern Poland.
The expert adds that extreme weather events are not forecast, although localized flooding due to storms is possible. It's worth monitoring weather warnings and planning your vacation to experience more stable weather. All indications are that patient tourists will be rewarded in the second half of August.
