Leszczyna: We are left with loopholes in the regulations. Abortion at 36 weeks under the ministry's microscope

After Wednesday's conference on the "Moje Zdrowie" preventive program, the Minister of Health was asked about a possible change in abortion regulations after what happened in Oleśnica.

- We all know that abortion regulations should be changed after the terrible verdict of the Constitutional Tribunal by Julia Przyłębska. This verdict is the cause of much suffering, drama and tragedy for women . And the cause of uncertainty, fears and concerns of doctors. And of course such a situation for patients, doctors and the Minister of Health is a fatal, unacceptable situation and I will do everything to change this situation - she said.

According to her, what happened in Oleśnica "actually eludes any assessment using censorship language."

- I am glad that Mr. Braun's immunity was taken away, because the punishment for attacking a medic must not only be unconditional and inevitable, but also very severe. I am convinced and I count on Mr. Braun to suffer such a punishment. Because politicians like Mr. Braun are also responsible for escalating aggression against medical workers - she emphasized.

As she said, when it comes to changing the regulations, she is counting on a change in the presidential seat and on Rafał Trzaskowski winning, "and as a democratic candidate he will sign the bill that will come out of the Sejm".

- If this Sejm is unable to accept the liberalization of abortion law in any other dimension than a return to what some call the abortion compromise, then I will advocate for this to happen as soon as possible - said Izabela Leszczyna.

At the same time, she admitted that she knew that "this does not satisfy anyone", but as she said, one has to put oneself in the shoes of women who are pregnant and in the shoes of doctors who have to decide about such a pregnancy. - No one would like to find themselves in such a situation - she assessed.

In her opinion, "what PiS and the paraconstitutional tribunal did was to throw out one of the premises and with it the deadline according to which it was possible to legally terminate a pregnancy in Poland."

- What happened in Oleśnica is the fault of PiS and what we call the Constitutional Tribunal - said Izabela Leszczyna.
