According to data from the Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology and the 2025 IPPEZ report, approximately 8 million people in Poland smoke cigarettes, representing approximately 28-29% of adults. Research also shows that the percentage of smokers has increased again in recent years, following a previous period of decline. Men aged 35-54 are most likely to smoke cigarettes.
TVP Info, citing The Guardian, presented the results of a study by scientists from University College London. They showed that, on average, one cigarette takes about 20 minutes off a person's life, so a typical pack of 20 cigarettes can shorten life by almost 7 hours.
The website also noted that, according to a report by the Institute of Conscious Man, 8 million people in Poland smoke, and 70,000 die from diseases related to this habit, primarily lung cancer. Medical research shows that passive smoking increases the risk of lung cancer and heart disease, among other things.
In non-smokers, smoke causes, for example, watery eyes, irritation of the nasal mucosa, coughing, recurrent respiratory infections, allergies and even asthma.
