Prof. Stanisław Ignatowicz was asked by PAP where food moths come from in our kitchens and pantries. He replied that we bring them from the store, for example, with candy by weight.

- The candies are displayed for sale in large cardboard boxes, the contents of which are replenished daily - he explained.

He added that this means "that new candies are being added to the old, increasingly older ones. These old ones can even be many months old."

The scientist emphasized that "food moths are very greedy, they eat everything."

What do food moths eat?

  • cereal products,
  • herbs,
  • tea,
  • delicacies,
  • candies.

- And if there are nuts in the candies, they simply go crazy with happiness - emphasized Professor Ignatowicz.

How do food moths attack our kitchens?

- And we bring these delicacies home, which is why in over 90 percent of kitchens and pantries, food moths are uninvited guests - noted Professor Ignatowicz .

He also explained that the smallest of the food moths, the humus moth, prefers products such as herbs, tea, dried vegetation in general, including tobacco products.

"It's what makes it possible to find a cigarette in a pack that's so disgusting that it's impossible to smoke it," he pointed out. He added that "this carious insect, next to the cigar beetle, is the number one enemy of tobacco companies, which fight it with all their might."
