This Was to Be Wizz Air's Longest Flight in History - Route Cancelled Just Before Takeoff

Wizz Air will not fly from Milan to Abu Dhabi for now. According to the Hungarian carrier's booking system, the long-awaited route operated by the new Airbus A321XLR was canceled a month before its premiere. It was supposed to be one of the carrier's longest routes in history , but Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reports that "unforeseen market changes" pushed the carrier to the final decision to cancel. The media speculate that the main reason for the unexpected changes may be the offer of cheap tickets by Etihad Airways on the same route.
This tour will not happenThe planned launch of the Milan Malpensa-Abu Dhabi route on June 2, 2025, will not take place. The connection, which was to be operated by a recently purchased Airbus A321XLR, was quietly removed from the carrier's booking system. According to the latest information, the airline has not published an official statement on the matter on its website, but it did respond to questions from Italian media. According to Corriere della Sera, Wizz Air suspended the intercontinental connection before takeoff due to "unforeseen changes in market conditions and operational reasons," which, according to online speculation, may be related to the emergence of this route by Etihad Airways.
The competitor from the Persian Gulf offers attractive flight prices on this section, which go hand in hand with the quality of the journey, while since the announcement of the route in September 2024, Wizz Air was supposed to sell only six thousand tickets for these flights. "Wizz Air lost the price war with Etihad, which offered very cheap tickets on the same route," comments Fly4free.pl.
Wizz Air Long RoutesIn addition to the canceled connection from Milan to Abu Dhabi, the Hungarian carrier has two more record-long routes in its network. These are flights from London Gatwick to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia , which, despite announcements, are not operated by new long-haul Airbuses, but by A321neo aircraft with fewer passengers.
The next route will be a connection from Gatwick to Medina, which is planned to be launched in August.
