Fire at Santa Cruz do Bispo prison caused by inmate who set fire to his bed

A fire broke out this Wednesday in a cell in the Santa Cruz do Bispo prison, in Matosinhos, after an inmate set fire to his own bed, reported Jornal de Notícias and confirmed to Observador by a source from the Matosinhos Volunteer Firefighters.

The prisoner in question, who was in the psychiatric ward, and a guard were taken by INEM to the hospital as a precaution because they inhaled smoke, but the fire did not spread to the rest of the facilities. On the Civil Protection website , the incident, which involved 12 officers and four vehicles, is already in the final stages.

The situation was considered resolved and the firefighters are no longer on site, according to what Observador learned from a source at the Matosinhos Volunteer Firefighters.
