Viana do Castelo firefighters were called until around 9:45 pm to put out nine new fires in rubbish containers in various areas of the city, said a source from municipal civil protection.
Contacted by Lusa news agency, the municipal coordinator of Civil Protection of Viana do Castelo, António Cruz, said that the first fire in a garbage container occurred at 8:57 pm on Rua Cidade de Riom.
Meanwhile, firefighters were called to eight other fires, using the same type of equipment, on several roads in the urban area of the city of Viana do Castelo.
António Cruz added that the PSP is monitoring the work.
This Wednesday, the PSP told Lusa that it is investigating the origin of several fires in urban furniture and terraces in the historic center of Viana do Castelo, which occurred on Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.
Contacted by the Lusa agency, a source from the PSP District Command of Viana do Castelo said this Wednesday morning that the "acts of vandalism" destroyed garbage containers, used clothing containers, waste bins, two terraces and decorations alluding to Carnival installed by the City Council in Praça da República.
The same source added that this morning complaints were filed by owners of commercial establishments regarding broken glass in shop windows, also on streets in the city's historic centre.
Speaking to Lusa, the municipal coordinator of Civil Protection in Viana do Castelo, António Cruz, said that firefighters were called to intervene in eight fire situations between 8:11 pm on Tuesday and 1:19 am this Wednesday.
According to the person in charge, the first incident occurred at 8:11 pm, on Rua Cidade de Riom, related to a fire in a garbage container and the last, at 1:19 am, on a terrace in the city's public garden.
