Families are calling for changes to the allocation of benefits and leave and a guarantee that wages will be maintained.
The importance of social support for families with children with cancer led, this Friday, the Secretary of State for Social Action and Inclusion, Clara Marques Mendes, to meet with parents of children with cancer and representatives of the Acreditar Association.
“The Secretary of State was open to the problems that were raised with her,” Rui Moreira Claro, father of a boy with cancer, told CM . He has been preparing a paper on “fair and equitable social support for children” for a year.
At the meeting, the families explained to the government the need to change the amount of the assistance allowance for a child with cancer, which is capped at 65% of the salary and has a maximum ceiling of 1,045 euros.
Rui Moreira Claro explained that “caring for a child is a priority and not a luxury, so it is important that there is no loss of income.”
Families also demand that both parents simultaneously care for their child and that the Social Inclusion Benefit paid to minors be 50%, or in full, which currently amounts to 324.55 euros.
Another demand is that the family assistance period be extended to more than 30 days. At the end of the meeting, Rui Moreira Claro noted that the Secretary of State for Social Action and Inclusion explained that "these concerns will be addressed by October."
