Pope proclaims Henry Newman Doctor of the Church

Pope Leo XIV confirmed this Thursday the opinion of the cardinals and bishops who are members of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints to confer the title of Doctor of the Church on the English cardinal John Henry Newman (1801-1890).
A native of London, Newman studied at Trinity College, Oxford (1816) and Oriel College (1822) and was ordained a priest in the Anglican Church. In 1845, he converted to Catholicism and in 1847 was ordained a priest in the Catholic Church.
Founder of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in England, he was also rector of the Catholic University of Ireland.
Named cardinal in 1879 by Pope Leo XIII and beatified in Birmingham on September 19, 2010, by Pope Benedict XVI, he would be canonized in Rome by Pope Francis on October 13, 2019.
Famous for his apostolate "in the field of intelligence," his complete works, collected in 37 volumes, cover a wide range of subjects, including theology, philosophy, literature, history, and spirituality. The Oratory's archives preserve approximately 70,000 letters he wrote.
The liturgical memory of Saint Henry Newman is celebrated in the Church on October 9th.
